Provincial Outreach & Liaison

As a provincial resource centre we are obliged to share our expertise with others interested in delivering service to ASD learners. We are involved with the establishment of autism specific services in existing special schools. The purpose is to bring good quality services closer to our people. We have trained the staff involved and we are offering continued support by means of scheduled visits and exchanges.

Over and above our annual staff allocation, the Western Cape Education Department allocated a provincial ASD team to us. A psychologist, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist and an educator have been appointed for 2010, 2011 and 2012. They will strengthen our outreach and liaison efforts.

We have a quarterly Asperger support day at our school which provides educators in main stream schools with continued information, training and support.

Vera school hosts a quarterly autism forum meeting for professionals working in the ASD field. It is a meeting place to exchange ideas and information and to establish links.

The autism collaboration meeting which is held once a term, is to strengthen inter-departmental links. It serves as a lobby group for the ever increasing demand for autism specific services. Prominent medical specialist, educators and department of education officials attend.
