Governing Body

The Governing Body (GB) at Vera School is comprised of 7 elected parent members, the principal (ex officio), two professional staff representatives, another staff representative and 1 member who is regarded as a specialist in the field of Autism. They serve for a period of 3 years. Governing Body meetings are held at least once a term.

An executive (chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer and secretary) is elected annually. The finance committee meets monthly and is a sub-committee of the governing body. The function of the GB is to manage and control the property,finances and activities at the school. They are responsible for interviewing prospective staff and for nominating possible candidates to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). As the employer, the WCED is responsible for the formal appointment of staff according to the annual staff allocation. The Governing Body can fund the appointment of additional staff in which case they become the employer.

An annual budget is drawn up by the GB and presented to the parents for approval.

The Governing Body may not intefere with the professional operation of the school.

A wide range of policy documents, including a grievance procedure, approved by the Governing Body is available at the school for perusal.
